The Daily Dark

" We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." Oscar Wilde Let thu be welcomed to The Daily Dark, We live in a world of dark happenings, where the shadows dance without our knowledge of it. Art is the light that shines over us, either to show us the true nature of the shadows or to help us dance with them. Art is what makes the darkness of everyday life brighter-this blog is an entrance to what art is for me. I'm 19, a mexican studying communications in Spain in love with art, vampires and candy. Hope you enjoy my blog, if not, drop dead-sooner or later you'll have to so take no offense. love, M.

You make me real

“Weeks passed, and the little Rabbit grew very old and shabby, but the Boy loved him just as much. He loved him so hard that he loved all his whiskers off, and the pink lining to his ears turned grey, and his brown spots faded. He even began to lose his shape, and he scarcely looked like a rabbit any more, except to the Boy. To him he was always beautiful, and that was all that the little Rabbit cared about. He didn’t mind how he looked to other people, because the nursery magic had made him Real, and when you are Real shabbiness doesn’t matter.” The velveteen rabbit

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuJaoVfUihA

4. Dale click a play

5. Dejate llevar

Lugares que inspiran:

la cama, la regadera, la cocina, el sofa

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose so let me simply add that it’s my very good honor to meet you, and you may call m- V

Pleasure to me is wonder—the unexplored, the unexpected, the thing that is hidden and the changeless thing that lurks behind superficial mutability. To trace the remote in the immediate; the eternal in the ephemeral; the past in the present; the infinite in the finite; these are to me the springs of delight and beauty.

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.

A cheap alternative to waiting

Life is a combination of certainties and uncertainties. There are so many things that you can not predict nor imagine that the list runs infinite. One thing is certain in this life though, that you are going to have to wait. Wait at the bus stop for the bus to arrive, in a plane on a vacations trip, on the metro while moving from one point of the city to another,   for a business partner  that is running late in Starbucks,  for a conference to begin, in the beauty parlor while they are doing your hair or for your nails to dry while you are at home.  People cope with waiting in different ways-the most common method is to reach out for an internet connected gadget.   They entertain themselves playing games like tetris,  the sims social, cityville and angry birds. Hours can pass by without them noticing, common what’s more interesting than the attack of angry red, blue and yellow birds? well maybe just maybe beating a friend of a friend’s record score.

What troubles me when I see people lost in their computer screens, like zombies that instead of flesh consume electricity, is that they are  consuming instead of creating. In comparison to reading were even if you are consuming the world another person created you are also creating a world because you put an image to the words given by the author. It doesn’t matter how precise the description in ink is you’ll always have to give something of yourself to make it come alive. It can be argued of course that you do the same when you go into a social arena place. There you have a universal format and each individual twists it and customizes it to its needs. But the degree of involvement is not the same, neither the way it happens.

First when you read an atmosphere is created around you, time exists only in the book you work concordant to it. While in the web time is non existent, it will run and things won’t change. Its not a question of rhythm but of constant interaction. Second Interaction itself, a book asks you to connect different areas of your being memories, dreams, observations, conversations, thoughts and knowledge in ways you  do not  do consciously .  Reading provides a framing outside of yourself build with material that lives in yourself. Social Network interaction via Facebook and twitter is mainly about sharing day to day experiences, photographs, playing games and most probably spying the photographs of people you bumped once in the hallway. There is no need to connect yourself to the experiences on a deep level. Interaction is in most cases superficial and ephemeral. (though when whales are involved things can change)

Thirdly the way conversation outside the network is build changes, when a person  reads their conversation shows it. They can jump from talking about the 19th century ideal of marriage to horseback riding  to the different ways to use a heroin needle without having lived in the 19th century, ridden a horse or done heroin.Reading takes people to places they have never been, not because it creates pictures in their heads-for that they can simply see a collection of photographs but because it describes them sensations and perspectives that build a whole that in the real life would take time and experience to collect.  A story has dialogues that might point towards issues preferred by the reader as well as points they might disagree totally. Without  their contrast  an engaging  narrative would be impossible to achieve. In Social networking when there is no interaction beyond the every day gives a limited framing, people only consume the ideologies of friends and people they feel close enough to friend or feel connected to what they tweet upon. Their world is enlarged indeed but only in a bubble like way. Fourthly, the art of literature can not be compared to the way communication in social networks takes place. In literature  games of words, of style and fluency take .Social networking is about being clear with your friends, symbolism and word plays are not for interaction but for adornment.  People cut and invent words to fit into 140 characters limit. Instead of enriching language its being impoverished. Literature aims to create a reality, transmit a message larger than itself, create an emotion through images created with words.-In Facebook you live the moment, comment on what happened on the day and observe the here and now of the others. You might paste the bits of conversations and smiles in photos to make their life stories of love and drama. But at the end of the days invention  is not the goal of this pages. If there is poetry in what is shared is because life is the inspiration of poetry not because its poetry in itself.

Fifth, and last point: a person can have a story that they read once and over again that takes them to places they love, emotions they dreamed or that comforts them.  They can share it with others and build a conversation around it, share impressions and feelings or simply consume it in the quietness of their mind. For the moment it is not natural to say that they have a favorite person they like seeing their pictures, reading their wall comments and statuses. If their online profile is created for that, selling an image it is more “normal” but  the barrier with Stalking is blurry.   Stalking is is a term commonly used to refer to unwanted and obsessive attention by an individual or group to another person. Social Networks lend themselves to  the blurring of these lines, to creating behaviors than in face to face life would be socially frowned upon and in many cases obtrusive.

People should read because it is a way of disconnecting from the reality of the every day. It changes the place where the chord connects. Reading connects with the different areas of the self while social networking connects from face to face  to online social life.  Events happen in such a rhythm and fluency that they are forgotten as soon as they happen. Time is never available to sit down and ponder on their effect, their reason or their future. People live on the every day without living it really they simply let themselves be shaped by the way the wind blows. They will fight when its needed,  wait when its called for and enjoy it while it lasts. The problem with social networking and gaming exclusively is that it creates a need for instant pleasure and reaction. Its like pushing fast forwarding and cloning at the same time. Things happen in greater speed and quantity. If  before time was not enough to process the individual chains of thought and action today its even less. Reading books does not necessarily force the individual to sit and think about his or her personal life. The narrative in the books can guide them to observe in another way the  life the events that they are living through and realize that there is far much  more than meets the eye. Reading is not pressing stop or pause, but simply observing life in slow motion in a way every detail can be perceived and assimilated.

At the end of the day its not a question about either reading or playing in social networks only. Its  about finding a balance between the two points. Both are a way of  disconnecting from reality.-plugging from one arena to the other- , they both alienate the user and in a way reading can distance a person more than a social network, both have a specific framing that can limit the way a person sees the world, both have interactions that can be forgotten.  I personally advocate for actively reading and behaving in social networks as a person who reads and has a world to share. The magic of reading is that you live a hundredth lives without moving from your sofa, the magic of social networks is that you talk with your friends disregarding their coordinates. If both things are combined new spaces can be created that enrich the way life is perceived and lived.   Next time when waiting for the bus, the metro, the friend, the business partner or the hair don’t automatically click on the angry birds app, try going into good reads or opening kindle. Who knows what you’ll find there, it might surprise you.
